What is a progressive web app?

A progressive web app, or PWA, is a website that works like an installed app, with offline use, home screen icons and notifications.

  • Also called PWA

What it means

A PWA is built with web technology but behaves much like a native app. Users can add it to their home screen, open it full screen, use it offline and, on most devices, receive notifications. It updates like a website, without app store releases.

Some device features and store visibility are still better served by native or cross-platform apps.

Why it matters for a business

For internal tools, field apps and customer portals, a PWA can deliver an app-like experience for less than the cost of store apps, with instant updates and one codebase for all devices.

A business example

Things to watch

  • Check support for the device features you need.

  • Test offline behavior and syncing carefully.

  • Plan how users will install it, since there is no store listing by default.

  • Notification support varies by device.
