Our notes
When we would choose it
OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most capable model, built for the hardest end-to-end work. It accepts text and images, supports tool calling and structured outputs, and has a context window of about one million tokens. It is also the premium tier of the family, so it earns its place only where cheaper models fall short.
We would treat Astra the way we treat other top-tier models: as the specialist in a pipeline, not the default. Most steps would run on GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6 Luna, with Astra reserved for the cases that are hard, rare and valuable.
The GPT-6 family is new at the time of review, and the original GPT-5 snapshots are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026. If you run on GPT-5 today, this is a good moment to set up a proper comparison: the same tasks, the same scoring, and results for your current model next to Astra and Sol.
For a fair comparison across providers, add Claude Fable or Claude Opus and Gemini Pro to the same test. We do this as part of AI model evaluation, and it usually settles the choice quickly.
Before you commit
Things to check before you commit
-
Premium pricing
It is the top-priced tier. Compare cost per finished task with GPT-6 Sol on the same work.
-
Speed
Plan for background jobs. Hard reasoning takes time.
-
Data terms
Confirm API data terms, retention settings and region for your organization.
-
A new family
GPT-6 is new. Test on your own examples before you switch a working system.
Alternatives
Models to compare it with
GPT-6 Sol
The middle model of the GPT-6 family, positioned for complex coding and agentic workflows at a mid price level.
Claude Fable 5.1
The top tier of the Claude family, for the most demanding reasoning and long-horizon agent work, priced above Opus.
Gemini 3.1 Pro
Google's most advanced Gemini model for reasoning, software engineering and agent work, reading text, images, audio, video and PDFs. Available as a preview.
