When we would choose it
FLUX.2 is the current generally available image family from Black Forest Labs, replacing FLUX.1 and FLUX.1 Kontext. The Pro, Flex and Max versions are available only through the Black Forest Labs API. FLUX.2 [dev] has open weights under the FLUX Non-Commercial License and supports text-to-image and editing with one or several reference images. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B has open weights under Apache 2.0.
The license details matter more than usual here. Running non-commercial weights in a commercial product requires a paid Black Forest Labs license. The FLUX.2 [dev] model card says generated outputs may be used commercially, but the weights themselves are a different question. When in doubt, use the API versions or the Apache-licensed Klein model.
In July 2026, Black Forest Labs announced FLUX 3, a model that handles image, video and audio. At review time it was in early access, with video available through the API first. We will review it separately once it is generally available.
For business visuals, FLUX is a strong candidate when reference-based editing and brand consistency matter. Compare it with GPT Image and Nano Banana on your own prompts, and with Stable Diffusion if self-hosting is a priority.
