Fit

Where it fits and where it does not

Good at

  • Fast replies in live chat and voice assistants.

  • Sorting, tagging and routing large volumes of messages.

  • Extracting fields from short documents and forms.

  • Tool calling and structured outputs at low cost.

  • Sub-steps inside larger agent workflows.

Not the right choice for

  • Complex, multi-step reasoning where errors are costly.

  • Very long documents beyond its 200K token window.

  • Audio or video input.

  • Self-hosting.

Use cases

Business use cases we would use it for

Email and ticket triage

Reading every incoming message, setting category and urgency and routing it. See email triage.

First-line support

Answering routine questions from your help content and handing the rest to people. See AI customer support.

Form extraction

Pulling names, dates and amounts from short forms and receipts into your systems.

Our notes

When we would choose it

Anthropic calls Haiku 4.5 its fastest model with near-frontier intelligence. It is the cheapest current Claude model, which makes it the natural choice for high-volume steps: triage, tagging, short replies and extraction. In many systems it handles most of the traffic while a larger model handles the exceptions.

One thing to watch: Anthropic lists its retirement as not sooner than October 15, 2026, and we could not find a named successor at review time. If you build on Haiku now, keep the model ID in configuration and plan to test a replacement. A thin integration layer makes that a small change. See LLM integration.

For comparison, Gemini Flash-Lite and GPT-6 Luna sit in the same low-cost, high-volume space. We would test two of them on your own messages before choosing.

Speed is the other reason to pick Haiku. In live chat and voice assistants, a reply that arrives in a moment feels natural, while a long pause feels broken. For those uses we would measure response time on real traffic, including tool calls, and keep prompts short. If a question needs deeper thought, the assistant can say it is checking and pass the task to a larger model in the background.

  • Quality on hard cases

Test the difficult 10 percent of your examples, not just the easy ones.

  • Context limit

The window is 200K tokens, smaller than Sonnet and Opus.

  • Data terms
