Fit

Where it fits and where it does not

Good at

  • Expressive, natural speech.

  • Many languages, 70+ for Eleven v3.

  • Low latency with the Flash models.

  • Real-time conversation with Eleven v3 Conversational.

  • Voice cloning with the speaker's consent.

Not the right choice for

  • Cloning voices without clear permission.

  • Commercial use on the free plan, which is non-commercial.

  • Transcription, which needs a speech-to-text model.

  • Hiding from listeners that a voice is AI.

Use cases

Business use cases we would use it for

Voice assistants

Natural spoken replies for phone and app assistants. See voice AI.

Audio content

Narration for courses, product videos and help content.

Localized audio

Voice content in many languages. See translation and localization.

Our notes

When we would choose it

Eleven v3 is the flagship text-to-speech model from ElevenLabs at the time of review. It supports more than 70 languages and is known for expressive speech. Eleven v3 Conversational is the real-time version for dialogue. For the lowest latency, Flash v2.5 covers 32 languages. ElevenLabs recommends Flash over the older Turbo models, which it describes as functionally the same.

ElevenLabs also offers voice cloning. Instant cloning needs about a minute of audio, and professional cloning needs 30 minutes or more, on higher plans. Cloning is powerful and needs care: only clone a voice with clear, written permission, and never use a cloned voice to mislead.

Licensing depends on the plan. Paid plans include commercial usage rights. The free plan is for non-commercial use and requires attribution. Check the plan terms before using generated audio in products or marketing.

For a phone assistant, the voice is only one part of the delay. Speech-to-text, the language model and text-to-speech all add time. We would pair a low-latency voice with a fast listening model such as Deepgram Flux and measure the whole chain.

For simpler needs at a lower price, OpenAI GPT-4o mini TTS is worth comparing. Listen to both with your own scripts before you choose. See AI customer support.

Before you commit

Things to check before you commit

  • Plan and rights

Paid plans include commercial rights. The free plan does not and requires attribution.

  • Consent for cloning

Only clone a voice with written permission from the speaker.

  • Latency

Use Flash or v3 Conversational for live calls, and measure end to end.

  • Disclosure

Tell listeners when a voice is AI-generated.
