What is a CRM?

A CRM, or customer relationship management system, stores contacts, companies, deals and interactions so a team can manage its customer relationships in one place.

  • Also called Customer relationship management

What it means

A CRM holds everything a business knows about its customers and prospects: contact details, companies, deals in progress, emails, calls and notes. Popular systems include HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive and Zoho CRM.

A CRM is only as good as its data. The most common problem is incomplete records, because people are too busy to type everything in.

Why it matters for a business

A trusted CRM lets a team see the full history with a customer, forecast sales and follow up on time. Integrations and AI can fill in records automatically, which is often what turns a half-used CRM into a useful one.

  • Agree on which fields are required and keep them consistent.

  • Connect data sources so records fill themselves.

  • Limit who can export customer data.
